چکیده

We study the transient dynamics occurring in a Wilson–Cowan type model of neuronal populations to explain psychophysical masking e/ects, in which a brie0y presented vernier is followed by a grating of a variable geometrical con1guration. A change in the spatial layout of the stimuli yields dramatic di/erences in the performance of the observers. In our model, these di/erences are explained by variations in the strength and duration of transient neural activity. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A Linear Analysis of Coupled Wilson-Cowan Neuronal Populations

Let a neuronal population be composed of an excitatory group interconnected to an inhibitory group. In the Wilson-Cowan model, the activity of each group of neurons is described by a first-order nonlinear differential equation. The source of the nonlinearity is the interaction between these two groups, which is represented by a sigmoidal function. Such a nonlinearity makes difficult theoretical...

Local Interactions in Neural Networks Explain Global Effects in Gestalt Processing and Masking

One of the fundamental and puzzling questions in vision research is how objects are segmented from their backgrounds and how object formation evolves in time. The recently discovered shine-through effect allows one to study object segmentation and object formation of a masked target depending on the spatiotemporal Gestalt of the masking stimulus (Herzog & Koch, 2001). In the shine-through effec...

Wilson–Cowan Equations for Neocortical Dynamics

In 1972-1973 Wilson and Cowan introduced a mathematical model of the population dynamics of synaptically coupled excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the neocortex. The model dealt only with the mean numbers of activated and quiescent excitatory and inhibitory neurons, and said nothing about fluctuations and correlations of such activity. However, in 1997 Ohira and Cowan, and then in 2007-2009 ...

Water Resources Management in the South of Kerman Province Using the System Dynamics Model

Integrated water resources management is recognized as one of the main needs of any society due to population growth and technological advancement. To implement integrated water resources management, modeling of this system is essential. On the other hand, water resources systems are highly complex and affected by various factors that are very difficult to identify and determine their role in w...

Excitatory and inhibitory interactions in localized populations of model neurons.

Coupled nonlinear differential equations are derived for the dynamics of spatially localized populations containing both excitatory and inhibitory model neurons. Phase plane methods and numerical solutions are then used to investigate population responses to various types of stimuli. The results obtained show simple and multiple hysteresis phenomena and limit cycle activity. The latter is parti...
